How to Use Leftover Aggregates – Waste Less, Save More
Whether you’ve recently finished a garden project or wrapped up a bit of DIY groundwork, it’s not uncommon to be left with a pile of leftover aggregates. Instead of letting it go to waste, why not put it to good use?
Here are some smart, simple, and cost-effective ways to reuse your leftover materials – so you get more bang for your buck, while keeping your outdoor space looking sharp.
🪨 Leftover Gravel & Decorative Stones
- Create a drainage strip along the edge of your driveway or garden path to prevent water pooling.
- Top up flower bed borders – it’ll suppress weeds and give your garden a neat, polished finish.
- Fill gaps between paving slabs or stepping stones to improve both drainage and appearance.
- Build a mini rock garden or feature area using a mix of gravel and larger stones.
🪵 Wood Chippings
- Use as mulch around plants and trees to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil over time.
- Create informal garden paths or play areas – ideal if you’ve got little ones and want a soft surface.
- Line compost heaps or animal pens to reduce odour and absorb moisture.
🪴 Topsoil or Compost
- Top up raised beds or containers to improve growing conditions for vegetables or flowers.
- Level out dips in the lawn by sprinkling a thin layer over low spots and gently raking it in.
- Start a new planting area – even a small corner can be transformed into a pollinator patch!
🧱 Sand or Recycled Hardcore
- Keep some aside for future patch-ups – especially useful for filling gaps or minor driveway repairs.
- Use as a base layer for small paving jobs, stepping stone paths, or shed foundations.
- Improve drainage in heavy clay soil by mixing sand through your garden beds.
♻️ Still Got Too Much?
We get it – sometimes there’s just more than you can use. If you’ve got a decent pile left over, why not try reselling or giving it away on Facebook Marketplace or local community groups? There's always someone tackling a small project who’d love to take it off your hands.
Just make sure it's clean and separated – and you might even make a few quid back or earn yourself a few cups of tea from a happy neighbour!
